People with orthopedic disabilities typically lead sedentary lifestyles due to lack of movement opportunities. Therefore, this population is generally at a high risk for obesity and depression. Many people also suffer from chronic pain, sleep deprivation and isolation. Injuries from the wear and tear and strain to their bodies, when performing daily living activities, are also common. These injuries can often be minimized when individuals are physically fit and have the strength to use appropriate techniques.
The Rancho Wheelchair Sports Program is offered free to all participants. Its operating budget is significantly less than other similarly structured athletic programs offered through schools and community-settings. Without this program, people with orthopedic disabilities would have little to no opportunity for movement, regular exercise or play competitive sports.
